Dale Berven was aboard Lipan for just six months from August 1961 to February 1962.   He was then transferred to COMSERVPAC at Pearl Harbor and left the USN as a YN3.

Lipan looking a little under the weather circa 1961.
Nice shot of Lipan tied up at Sierra Piers in the Sub Base at Pearl Harbor.  Note the infamous tower and the subs tied up in front of it.  Top of the line vessels back in the early sixties.  Razor blades today.

Destroyer Row Pearl Harbor .  Dale shot this from the 5th floor barracks of COMSERVPAC,  it's about a block or so from "TIN CAN ALLEY."

A CHILEAN trainer that's used by their Navy to accustom their new swabs to sea life.  They'd come into port with the crews lining the gunnels, singing Chilean songs from home, you'd hear them a mile away, and man was it beautiful to see and hear.
The Arizona Memorial.

A cloud anomaly that sent the "Berve" to GQ.   When Dale looked out his window to Kole Kole pass he thought Schofield Barracks had blown up and started making telephone calls but it was just clouds.
Diver Dale reporting.   Doing a little scuba diving in Hawaii.

Dale ready to do a "Swannee" off the cliffs on the North Shore of Oahu near Makaha.
Not only did Dale make the leap but he talked two of his buddies into leaping too.  That's Dale at the top of the trio flying.   Dale left Lipan and was transferred to COMSERVPAC where he made YN3 when this photo was snapped
The EM Club at Hickam  Air Force base.  The "home" piers of all ATF's & ARS's was Alpha Piers at the mouth of the channel into Pearl Harbor.     The road access to the piers was through Hickam and we used their facilities all the time.
Dale took a ride out to the "Blowhole" natural water wonder on the windward side and bumped into this Hawaiian that was catching his supper casting a net from the reefs.
Nice photo showing the strata as layer upon layer of lava slowly built up to create and expand the Hawaiian Islands.
Nice shot of Hanauma Bay in Hawaii.  A gorgeous circular bay with a narrow inlet and calm waters with beautiful coral formations and reefs.  Elvis filmed "Blue Hawaii" here.  Dale says that the reefs back then were not protected yet by the government and had been badly abused and misused.  In a few short years thereafter things started coming back after government intervention.
Another view of Hanauma Bay.  The adjacent road looked down upon the bay from and there was an access road that made the descent to the beach area.
Hanauma Bay from another angle.  You can see the open areas where folks are swimming and the reef areas.   Circa 1961.
