the right is one of the Japanese boats Lipan was chasing in the Trust

Territories for fishing illegally for Tuna. Bill writes, "We caught several of

them and took them into port. I don't remember where we took them but I

know we made a liberty in the Palau group."

Who says that boatswainmates are all tough guys? Here's a

shot of two BM's from Lipan in 1952 modeling some outfits

that they bought in Japan.

On the right is a couple of Lipan shipmates enjoying a cigarette break.

That's Johnny Swanson with the hat and the other fella is unidentified. On

the table is a package of crackers and ....er....ummm .... some Pepsi

maybe?

On the left is a bunch of Lipan sailors reading their mail after

mailcall.  On the pier is a varied assortment of the cars

owned by shipmates back in 1952.  Looks like a Buick in

the foreground.

On the right we have three shipmate buddies enjoying a day at the beach.

On the left is Frank Nosal ENFN.  John Swanson is in the middle and the

third shipmate in unidentified.

This is a photo taken from Lipan and

showing a high-line transfer with the

USS Arikara ATF 98. Bill wrote that,

"It was badly needed supplies.  We

exchanged our third run movies for their

third run movies." Note the 40mm Gun

Tub on the 01 level. The guns were

removed later in that decade.
