The USS Lipan ATF 85 and the USS Stark County LST 1134 were both based in Pearl Harbor during the 1950s. I was stationed aboard the 1134, first, and then transferred to the ATF 85. Is there a way to combine a reunion for the 2 ships and to have that reunion in Pearl Harbor? The Hawaiiana Hotel has good rates and would be a good place to stay, I'm told.

In March 2009, Carol Lee turned to me and said, "When is your next Lipan reunion?" "Why?" I asked. "I miss the Lipan Women," she said. "You met them for the first time in 2006 at the reunion." "I know," she said, "But they were such high quality women, I'd like to see them again." "Where?" I asked. "How about on Oahua, where all of this began." I said, "I'll ask Rich Tetrault." And I did...

Hi all! glad I found this. I was aboard Lipan a couple of years and was presant when she was decommissioned in Saebo Japan in '73 We were in Vietnam at the end of the war. As I read "war stories" posted, I could'nt believe the simularity to my own expeirences aboard Lipan We too were involved in bomb testing, in Atka Alaska I believe, and we did play chicken with Russin trawler and so much more!

Admin reply: Hey Curtis. The island with the nuclear tests in the Aleutians was "Amchitka". There was an AEC base there. You can read about the tthree tests at Greenpeace's website.

Was at Naval Base Guam 1952/53/54, remember the Lipan, and also I believe Apache, seems like they would make a run to some of the outer islands to take provisions to them, guam was a bad place to be when you were just 18/at least i thought so at the time/, sure would like to do it all over again! there was an em club there cant remember name, but they had steaks about 2 ft wide.

Your story and pics of the Gidriphon bring back memories of dancing with her in the fall of '69 while on Chowanoc.

This is a terrific website for old Tug Sailors.

Hi Rich,

Just stopped by the website tonite as I do every so often to recall old memories. I enjoy the site and enjoyed the reunion in San Mateo, Calif with my shipmates. You do a great job with the site. Hello to all and hope to see some shipmates again.
Tom Welhouse

Admin reply: Sure was good to see Tom in California. We had about 17 Lipanees attend that reunion and we had a great time.
