The Gidrofon (Soviet Trawler) goes into all back full before we can apply the brakes and as we shoot past her she cuts astern of us and tries to pull past us on our opposite (port) side.  We were backing down ourselves at this point and our Captain did a great job at maneuvering to keep apace with the squirmy Trawler.  These "chicken" games went on for most of the time we were on station in Vietnam.  Sometimes Gidrofon would sit idle for days and sometimes she'd be running full power in a dash to get no place.     Whenever a Carrier Battle Group was in the region (and there were dozens) the Soviets would scurry off trying to stir the pot and we'd give chase and herd them back away from the Carriers.

The Gidrofon (Soviet Trawler), failing to get by Lipan on her starboard side, has maneuvered to Lipan's port side and is going full speed for the Carrier Battle Group.  It was all to no avail as we outraced her and "urged" her to discontinue her harassing efforts.    You can see the trawler sets low in the water and as the months ticked off she'd be consuming fuel and supplies and would start to ride higher and higher out of the water.  Then we'd get word that P3 Orion aircraft were tracking its replacement and we'd be updated daily.  On the expected arrival date of the new Soviet we'd be greeted first by the P3 aircraft and then the new trawler would poke its nose over the horizon and Soviets would commence their handover.
