This is a nice picture of an Aircraft Carrier conducting Flight Ops in the Gulf of Tonkin, near Vietnam. You will note that two aircraft have just been catapulted from the bow cats, one already airborne and one about to lift off. Additionally if you look closely abaft the Island (to the rear of the superstructure) you can see right through the ship's hull at its deckedge aircraft elevator. Battle Groups frequently plied the waters near us and the Soviet Intelligence-Gathering ship that we constantly "shadowed" always tried to interfere with them. The Carriers at times were so close to us that we could hear the announcements over their 1MC (PA systems) as they shot past at more than 30 knots. There was some tricky maneuvering trying to contain the Soviet, dodge the carrier, and dodge the half dozen escorts in the Battle Group.

This bottom picture tells it all. Notice that Lipan is
being serviced by a helicopter at the top of the screen. Frequently when a
Carrier was going to steam nearby Lipan they would bring mail and other urgent
supplies, after all, we might spend months chasing Gidrofon before we got to
shore, and mail and necessities were badly needed. The Trawler would use
this opportunity to scamper after the Carrier, knowing that we would be busy
with the helo-detail. Of course this was expected and the Carrier would make
sure that they were positioned to outrun the Trawler before dispatching the helo.
Notice the Trawler in the bottom right chasing the Carrier while we were busy
with the helo. Aircraft Carriers do in excess of 30 knots. Gidrofon did
about 12 knots.
