Ben Siebels, a shipmate of mine,  was an EM1 aboard Lipan from 1967 to 1970.  He was a career sailor retiring as a Senior Chief.

Lipan in the Marine Railway at Pearl Harbor Naval Shipyard circa 1969.  The railway hauls the entire ship and the surrounding scaffolding up onto land.  The movie "Tora Tora Tora" was being filmed there at the same time and during one eye-blinking scene (if you have the movie and really look hard) you can see Lipan sitting there in all her glory in the Railway.
Lipan in Midway.  Nixon wanted to talk to Thieu, Vietnam's Premier, and chose Midway as the place.  That means they needed huge communication vessels and that meant they needed harbor tugs to assist them.  We escorted these two YTB's all the way from Pearl Harbor.  Like a mother duck and her two ducklings.

Atomic Energy Commission equipment lashed on Lipan's fantail.  Note the LCVP landing craft in tow, used to access various islands in Aleutians for the nuclear tests.
Bosun Ray glances back at the LCVP which had broached on the island of Semisopochnoi in Alaska and tossed 18 sailors into the sea, losing the entire load, the snowcat, the boat and ending the mission for Lipan.

Nice photo of some choppy seas in the Aleutians.  If I had to guess, it looks like Kobakoff Bay on Atka.

Ben Siebels,  an EM1 in 1969 and now a retired Senior Chief doing what he did best.  Feeding the crew.
Like I said, Ben fed the crew in 1969.  This monstrous Halibut and another smaller one fed every one of us.  At the time we had Fish & Wildlife experts aboard to monitor the nuclear blast effect on animals and they dissected the fish's head and examined a bone there that determined the fish to be around 45 years old.  Didn't taste that old.  Behind Ben is Simbulan SN, a stewardsmate, (Simbu) and Mel Israel SK2 in the sunglasses.
Here's Halibut #2.  Not much smaller than the 1st.  We ate good that night and it was Ben's treat
Fishing late in the evening when the sun was till shining bright in Adak Alaska.   Ben sez, "
The person fishing for Dolly Vardon in the lake on Adak was CWO Jessie Mayden, the Engineering Officer at the time. But we never caught any trophy fish there.""

Dunno what it is ... or why we're doing what we're doing ... but it sure is interesting.

Mel's Apartment.  Mel Israel SK2 seated with back to camera in blue shirt and an assortment of Lipan sailors enjoying some Liberty.
Lipan does a luau.  Hawaiians tend the roasting pig in a pit as shipmates John Gonzales FN and Rice SF1 get ready to dig in.

Sasebo Japan as it appeared in the late 1960's.  A sailor's playground.  Today, because of the high value of real estate the bars are gone and the area is all housing and high value buildings.
