In this first of five videos Lipan is shadowing a Soviet Intelligence Trawler named Gidrofon in The Tonkin Gulf off Vietnam in 1967.     The Soviet vessel was crammed with electronic equipment and Lipan was outfitted with jamming gear to thwart their efforts.    Aircraft Carrier Battle Groups plied the waters and frequently steamed near us conducting flight operations for land attacks in country and Gidrofon would sprint after them to gather information and to harass the group by attempting to force them to change course.   Lipan's job was to give chase, jam the electronic signals, and "persuade" Gidrofon to alter course.

Here, Gidrofon is chasing after an approaching Aircraft Carrier Battle Group.  A frequent tactic was to steam at full speed towards the Carrier with Lipan in pursuit alongside.  Gidrofon would then suddenly back down full and Lipan's momentum would cause us to shoot past them before we could back down.  Gidrofon would then pass astern of us and resume the chase on Lipan's other side.  In this video Gidrofon had been chasing the Carriers with Lipan on her port side when she goes into reverse and resumes the chase on the opposite side.
